Was at some combined Secondary Schools Band concert at Singapore Conference Hall just now. Schools which were still more vivid in mind were Marsilling Sec, HCI and SJI. Partly because their music was good, but also because their pieces were close to heart.
But that's not what I'm talking about.
It's the behaviour of some... correction MANY concert goers that really irked me.
OK. So here are some basic rules on watching a concert and where some of these cows at the Singapore Conference Hall went wrong.
1) You don't in the middle of a performance. Even if you must you don't do it in big droves or in the middle of a fucking chord. When HCI played Machu Picchu there was a damn WALKOUT by members of the audience... (AND IN BIG DROVES TOO!) simply because they were the last band and hence their kids' bands have played. Musicians are in a 'live' situation and a walkout is an insult to them.
2) Cell phones off. Or at least in vibration or silent mode. The last thing you need in soft passages are the cacophony of nokia ringtones. Or any other ringtone for the matter. As ALWAYS, some Singaporeans fail in this aspect.
3) Punctuality. I know I'm no saint in this aspect, but the last thing you want, surely, is to be locked out by ushers at the door and not get your money's worth from the concert.
Sigh. Gracious society my ass.
